O «monumento líquido» principal é um dos baluartes da cidade histórica internacional suíço. Em 1886 um sociedade dedicada a bombagem e de fornecimento de trabalho na borda do lago, decidiu escapar da água durante a noite para reduzir a pressão nos tubos da cidade, porque a demanda de água foi muito menor do que durante o dia. Assim, um jato de água jorrou de alguns metros na vertical e ajudou a descompactar. Esta necessidade original, a idéia se tornou uma realidade de 1891, quando a cidade de Genebra, decidiu instalar o Jet d’Eau (nome do jato em francês) no porto, acompanhado pela iluminação elétrica, mas não até 1930, quando foi inaugurado oficialmente.
